Winners of the Business in the Arts Awards Announced

Winners of the Business in the Arts Awards Named

(Concord, NH) - Four New Hampshire companies were singled out for their generosity during the 1999 Business in the Arts Awards May 11 in Bedford.  Sponsored by the New Hampshire Business Committee for the Arts, the Awards are presented annually to recognize and honor outstanding contributions and support of the arts in the state.  Winners were judged by their peers as having made the most significant contributions of time, talent and advocacy of the arts in New Hampshire.

Bell Atlantic, Devine, Millimet & Branch P.A., RMC Research Corporation, and Accompany were the winners in each of four categories based on business size.  Each was recognized for their combination of financial sponsorships, employee involvement, special projects and donations of products and services.  This year marked the second time in three years that Bell Atlantic has been recognized for the prestigious award and the first time in the history of the awards program this has occurred.

Jameson French, president of Northland Forest Products received the Leadership Award, an award created to recognize exceptional leadership and commitment to arts advocacy by a business executive.

Each winner received a specially commissioned handcrafted award created by cabinetmaker David Lamb.

Perennial favorite, Tom Rush, once again performed the master of ceremonies duties for the capacity crowd of business and arts leaders.  The evening showcased performances and demonstrations by New Hampshire participants in the upcoming Smithsonian Folklife Festival including Irish music and dance by Regina Delaney, Mike Serpa and Jake Stewart; Yankee and Franco music by Rodney Miller and David Surette; Polish music and storytelling by Gary Sredzienski; and bagpipes by Gordon Webster.  Additionally, the evening's menu, centerpieces, door prizes and awards reflected the Smithsonian theme. The 1999 Smithsonian Folklife Festival will be held in June on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

Corporate sponsors for the 1999 Business in the Arts Awards were Bank of New Hampshire, Bell Atlantic, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Hampshire, Citizens Bank, Fleet Bank - NH, Healthsource, a CIGNA HealthCare Co., Jefferson Pilot Financial, Liberty Mutual Group, Orr & Reno, Public Service Company of New Hampshire, and State Street Global Advisors.
