Newsletter 2001JULY 2001LEADERSHIP ARTS SERIES 2001 Spaces are still available for the five-session Leadership Arts Series beginning in September. Leadership Arts is a networking and training program for business and community leaders who are interested in increasing their role and effectiveness in the arts. The program is open to those already serving an arts organization in a trustee role as well as those who have an interest in assuming placement on a board. Leadership Arts curriculum will include topics practical in content as well as the broader, more philosophical implications of the arts. Several interactive arts sessions will provide a unique, hands-on perspective. Please call the NHBCA at 224-8300 immediately if you are interested in participating. BUSINESS IN THE ARTS AWARDS The Seventeenth Annual Business in the Arts Awards was held on May 8. BAE SYSTEMS, Nashua; Ledyard National Bank, Hanover; The Tracey Edwards Company, Inc., Manchester; and 100 Market Group, Ltd., Portsmouth were the Award recipients. Each was cited for their specific achievements of support through a combination of financial sponsorships, encouragement of staff involvement, special initiated programs and donations of products to cultural organizations statewide. The Leadership Award, created to honor exceptional leadership and commitment for a lifetime achievement of arts advocacy by a business executive, was presented to Dr. Sylvio Dupuis for his devotion, promotion, and steadfast leadership in his many professional and personal endeavors to ensure the continuing role of the arts. The evening featured Tom Rush as Master of Ceremonies and encore performer. He hosted the other New Hampshire performance guests who illustrated the theme of art created and performed by members of New Hampshire's workforce. The amateurs, who continually strive for excellence in their artistic pursuits outside of the workplace, included performers from The Raylynmor Opera, Tom Burack, storyteller and the 80 member barbershop harmony group, The Nashua Granite Statesmen. Attorney and painter Robert M. Larsen created watercolors of Shaker windows as the award prizes. The Corporate Sponsors were Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in New Hampshire, BAE SYSTEMS, Bank of New Hampshire, Citizens Bank, Ernst & Young, Fisher Scientific, Jefferson Pilot Financial, Liberty Mutual Group, Markem Corporation, McLane, Graf, Raulerson & Middleton, Public Service of NH, State Street Global Advisors, and Verizon. Sponsored by the New Hampshire Business Committee for the Arts, the Awards are presented annually to recognize and honor outstanding support of the arts. The four winning companies and one business executive were selected by a peer panel from nominations submitted which highlighted businesses statewide for their significant contributions of time, talent and advocacy for the arts. AUDIENCE DEVELOPMENT SURVEY The Audience Development Survey commissioned by the NHBCA in 2000 continues to be of interest to and utilized by New Hampshire's arts institutions. A series of presentations were held in the five market areas studied as well as a general presentation in February in Concord. The intent of the Survey is to support New Hampshire organizations to become more effective in their audience development efforts by learning more about the interests, preferences and behaviors of people who attend very few performing arts events in major population areas of the state. One of the key findings is that marketing and communications efforts should focus on the primary barriers to attendance, specifically to increase awareness of events. Communications should also seek to overcome the stated barrier that people are too busy to attend. Major support of this project was provided by the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, a statewide foundation established in 1962. Additional support was received from NHBCA members: Citizens Bank, Jefferson Pilot Financial, Public Service of New Hampshire, Verizon, and the French Family Foundation. The "arts anchors" who assisted in the development of the survey questions - American Stage Festival, Capitol Center for the Arts, Colonial Theatre, Hopkins Center, and The Music Hall - also provided support. The executive summary of the survey results are available online at www.nhbca.com or you may contact the NHBCA at 224-8300 for a copy. CREATIVE ECONOMY INITIATIVE The NHBCA has been involved in The New England Council's Creative Economy Initiative. The CEI was formed from a study the NEC commissioned to learn about and leverage the growing importance of arts and culture on the economic life of New England. For the first time, the creative sector has been analyzed in its economic entirety, including nonprofit and commercial enterprises, and the region's numerous individual artist-entrepreneurs. There are three key components of this Creative Economy. The first is the Creative Cluster, defined as those enterprises and individuals that directly and indirectly produce cultural products. The second is the Creative Workforce, defined as the thinkers and doers trained in specific cultural and artistic skills who drive the success of leading industries that include, but are not limited to arts and culture. The third is the Creative Community, defined as a geographic area with a concentration of creative workers, creative businesses and cultural organizations. In the last year, the NHBCA has helped to plan and host two CEI-related events and has participated in several New England wide meetings to further refine the study and initiate strategy to provide a blueprint for supportive action. For more information on the Creative Economy Initiative go to www.nefa.org or contact the NHBCA at 224-8300. BUSINESS RESOURCES FOR THE ARTS The NHBCA continues to consult with member companies on projects and match business volunteers to boards. Some of the work in this past year includes:
The NHBCA was founded in 1985 to educate, motivate and recognize business support of and participation in the arts. It has more than 70 business members, and participates in and administers programs that advocate for the positive partnership between business and the arts. |
